What are refrigerants? Refrigerants are fluids that absorbs heat at low temperatures and rejects heat at higher temperatures. The principles of refrigerant allow for heat pumps and straight air conditioners to function properly; because of their pressure temperature relationship. This relationship allows for heat transfer.

In the HVAC industry refrigerants are given a trade name known as “R” names. Examples of these names are R22, R134a, and R502. These names help to describe the different types of refrigerants. Refrigerants have various chemical make ups, along with different properties. Some refrigerants are only able to work in high pressures while others use low pressures to function properly.

There are three main make ups of refrigerants that are currently used. Hydrogenated Fluorocarbon Refrigerants (HFCs), which is made up of hydrogen, fluorine, and carbon. Because they do not use a chlorine atom (which is used in most refrigerants) they are known to be one of the least damaging to our ozone. Hydrogenated Chlorofluorocarbon Refrigerants (HCFCs), which are made up of hydrogen, chlorine, fluorine, and carbon. These refrigerants contain minimal amounts of chlorine; they are not as detrimental to the environment as some other refrigerants. Chlorofluorocarbon Refrigerants (CFCs), which contain chlorine, fluorine and carbon. These refrigerants carry high amounts of chlorine so they are known for being the most hazardous to the ozone layer.

Sometimes refrigerants consist of a two or more chemical compounds. These blends break down into two types: Zeotropes and Azeotropes. Zeotrope refrigerant mixes are mainly made of three different types of refrigerants. The characteristic that describes this type of refrigerant is that all three refrigerants keep their own properties; they act as 3 individual refrigerants. Azeotropes are mainly a blend of two refrigerants. The property that defines this type of refrigerant is it acts as a single refrigerant. This effect the boiling points of both types of refrigerants.

You must understand one of the most important fundamentals of refrigerants before expanding into how they work. This key principle is that refrigerants do not make things ‘cold’ they remove heat. This principle is preached in the HVAC industry. It is a common misunderstanding of homeowners and technicians.

A pressure temperature relationship is a way of describing the specific temperature that relates directly with the pressure of a substance. This allows control of refrigerants boiling temperatures. Controlling a refrigerants boiling temperature allows for proper heat transfer.

Heat transfer is when heat from one place is transfered to another place, this is also referred to as a refrigerant cycle. Generally we control heat transfer through air, water and refrigerants.

This type of heat transfer happens through conduction. Conduction is when heated molecules, with lots of movement, collide with slow moving molecules. The warmer molecules, fast moving, always move towards the cooler ones, or the slow moving molecules.

Refrigerants are sold in disposable container that include a check valve. This limits the reuse of old refrigerants and prevents mixing refrigerants. Refrigerants are identified by a standard color code. The labels also contain information on which type of refrigerant is in the container along with any safety hazards there are.

There are several safety hazards when handling refrigerants. In order to help prevent damage to the ozone, technicians are required by law to become EPA certified. There are four (4) main types of certification; Type I, Type II, Type III, and UNIVERSAL. Type I includes small appliances such as refrigerators. Type II includes high pressure appliance with the exclusion of small appliances such as split-systems. Type III includes low pressure systems such as chillers. A Universal certification includes all three types of certifications. For more information on refrigerants, their properties, how they effect the environment, and becoming certified, consult your local supply house, manufacturers, or the escro institute.

Going Green With Commercial Equipment

By Carl Cramer

Doing your part for the environment is just as important in your place of business as it is in your home. Going green is not just a fad anymore. It is important to you and your community as well as being friendly to the planet. Once considered expensive, it is now much more reasonable to upgrade your refrigeration, heating and other commercial appliances.

What can you do to help keep the environment clean and upgrade your business environment at the same time? First, examine information available about the company that you are hoping to use and see if they can provide you with clean, energy efficient units such as coolers, freezers, HVAC, ice machines, beverage machines and commercial kitchen equipment. Also examine their service and maintenance agreements. Many companies will offer ways of helping you help the environment. Maintenance is a crucial way that you can help safeguard the air we breathe. Some older A/C units may be leaking a form of Freon or other refrigeration gasses that can be harmful to the planet by affecting the ozone layer surrounding our planet. Even a slow leak can influence the efficiency of your refrigeration and A/C systems. Many companies offer a service to recapture any gasses from the system and can dispose of the gasses safely.

Refrigerating and heating systems should be checked at least twice a year to ensure the system is compliant and not putting out any harmful or dangerous emissions. Keeping your commercial refrigeration systems in optimal running condition will also save you operating capital. An efficient system will require less energy to operate as well as reducing the need for fossil fuel generated electricity.

It is of the utmost importance for those commercial and industrial businesses that maintain refrigeration units and other commercial appliances to purchase and properly maintain their equipment for the sake of saving operating expense as well as doing your part for the environment.

To start your investigation for a reputable company that can help you go green with the refrigeration units and other equipment in your business, contact Yukon Refrigeration, http://www.YukonRefrigeration.com, in Mt. Vernon, Illinois.

A History of Refrigeration – How Refrigeration Has Evolved Over Time!

By Aaron James Woods

Prior to the 1800′s people used age old methods for preserving their food; spicing, salting, pickling, drying, and smoking were all commonplace. This was reflected in people’s diets. There wasn’t much fresh food consumed, people mostly subsisted on bread, cheese and salted meats.

19th Century

Early in the 19th century, people began buying and selling ice in order to cool their food and beverages. Ice began to be shipped to warmer parts of the world as shipment methods improved. By the end of the century, refrigeration had become commercialized. Ice was still the main method of refrigeration. Contamination quickly became an issue, however. During storage or shipment ice could come in contact with numerous contaminated surfaces.

20th Century

In the beginning of the 20th century a German engineer named Carl Von Linde invented a process to produce liquid air, and eventually liquid oxygen on a large scale, for the purpose of household refrigerators. Ammonia-cycle commercial refrigeration was also introduced at this time. Artificial refrigeration was common by 1914. It became possible to ship refrigerated items by rail, thus increasing the different products available to common people. By the middle of the century, trucks and trailers could transport refrigerated items.

Safety Issues

Refrigeration had some safety issues. Refrigerants like methyl chloride and sulfur dioxide could cause illness and even death if they leaked on someone. Ammonia was equally toxic.

By the middle of the 20th century, a safer group of chemicals was discovered to refrigerate with called chlorofluorocarbons. Safer and more affordable refrigeration opened up new gateways in business for new types of food storage, packaging and presentation.

The meatpacking, ice, and brewing industries benefited from new refrigeration technology, but they were not the only ones. Florists, metal workers, paper manufacturers and even morticians profited from the technology as well.

In 1973, Prof. James Lovelock reported finding very small amounts of chlorofluorocarbons in the earth’s atmosphere. The next year, Sherwood Rowland and Mario Molina predicted that CFCs were going to reach the high stratosphere and damage the ozone layer. In 1985 the hole in the ozone layer over the Antarctic had been discovered and by Rowland and Molina’s prediction was proven accurate.

In order to prevent further damage new technologies in refrigeration have been developed. Hydroflourocarbons, for example, have no known effect on the ozone layer. Currently, CFCs are no longer used, and even outlawed in many places. Refrigeration is safer and more convenient than it ever has been.

Commercial Refrigeration For Your Business

By Greg Pierce

Commercial refrigeration is very convenient for businessmen who own large restaurants or grocery stores. Let us discuss some tips on choosing the equipment necessary for this.

First, it is important to choose the right location for the commercial refrigerators. If they are to be situated in dim-lit areas, make sure that the units come with their own automatic pilot lights.

Most of these equipment are manufactured with stainless steel casings to facilitate ease of cleaning and maintenance. The size of typical refrigerator should be selected with regards to the requirements of the business. If you are in the business of selling food items, opt for units with glass doors not only for ease of locating refrigerated items but also for the amount of electricity saved. This is because the user can already see what is needed before the door is opened.

The equipment needed for this type of refrigeration should be installed and maintained by specialists and technicians with the proper training. Do not just pick the services of any technician. They should be specialists in this field. Equipment categorized in commercial refrigeration is comprised of restaurant coolers, restaurant freezers, restaurant chillers, grocery coolers, and grocery freezers, among others. The coolers are for bottled and packed drinks, such as sodas, yoghurt drinks, milk, etc.

Coolers maintain the coldness of drinks without freezing their contents. They may have glass doors or the newer models which don’t utilize doors. The freezers maintain a much colder temperature for such products as ice cream, and processed meat. They usually store products horizontally for easy access. The chillers are those units that are usually as long as grocery shelves and store vegetables and fruits. They are also like the coolers maintaining a lower temperature that would avoid freezer burn.

The compressors of commercial refrigerators are the ones that affect the temperature and pressure of the air vapors within the cooling equipments. The location and size of these compressors vary depending on the model. If the refrigerator unit is not cooling properly, a qualified technician must check the compressor.

If the refrigerator is not able to maintain a constant temperature, check the following: sub heating, sub cooling, and operation temperatures. The fans of the refrigerator aid in regulating the temperature within the cooling chamber. These fans should be regularly cleaned for smooth operations. Use a voltage checker to make sure the fans are getting the power they need. The fans also affect the operation of the compressors.

Once you’ve spent a few thousand Euros on commercial refrigeration for your kitchen, the last thing you want to do is slip into lazy habits and not keep on top of it. Not only will this minimise the longevity of the commercial refrigeration, but it will also reduce the quality of the food you store inside it.

Make it a regular thing to do a once over on your commercial refrigeration equipment to ensure there are no problems or potential problems, such as problems with the doors or frost starting to form. If you spot it early, it can mean you prevent a very stressful period of time in your kitchen! Imagine if your refrigerator stops working properly when you have 100 people wanting to be served in your restaurant, you are going to have one heck of a task on your hands. So do your best to maintain it by checking over things, and replacing any worn parts as necessary. A small part being worn down can, like anything, lead to much bigger problems.

So ensure you do the above on a regular basis, and your commercial refrigeration equipment should stay in top shape. You know what’s coming next (and even worse, more importantly) don’t you? Cleaning! It is simple, but I agree it is very boring. But it’s a nice feeling when you finish and your commercial refrigeration appliances look shiny and new. You have to make sure you clean the interior really well, just using some soapy water. I would recommend you do this every 4 – 6 weeks to ensure you keep on top of things.

Also clean the outside of it, get it looking nice and shiny. Each of the components also needs cleaning, such as the motor and the fan. I know this is something you would expect me to tell a child, but please make sure you have unplugged the commercial refrigeration appliances before you do this. Sounds simple, which is it, but people always overlook it, and regret it! If you keep the fan clean, then it will stay in full working order and will prevent frost-formation. So you can see how keeping on top of the cleaning can avoid other problems.

Hopefully these few tips have given you an idea of what needs to be done in order to maintain your commercial refrigeration. Just as you wouldn’t buy a car and not clean it or have it serviced, don’t buy refrigeration equipment and not clean it and service it.

Refrigeration is an important consideration for everyone. Whether you are talking about home refrigeration for the average person or commercial refrigeration it all matters. Everyone wants to find a refrigeration system that will keep food cold and will allow the food to be healthy and safe to consume.

If you are in the restaurant business then you know that the quality of the food and drinks you serve to your patrons can make or break your company. If you serve food that is cold, old or stale then word will get out and your business will suffer as a result. Both food and drinks need to be stored appropriately so that they will ready to offer to customers when the time comes. What you need is to select the right commercial refrigeration system that will keep foods at the temperatures they are supposed to be at while in storage.

If you are a new restaurateur and do not have much experience with commercial refrigeration then how do you know which system wins top marks and is suitable for your eatery? It helps to talk to those who are in the same business as you are to find out what they have and what you should be looking for. Here are some other factors that you must bear in mind before you buy a refrigeration source for your establishment.

You have to decide what type of refrigerator you need. Commercial refrigerators are larger than standard ones and will make it possible to store larger quantities of foods and foods in bulk. Think about how many frozen products that will need to go into the fridge and freezer areas. When looking at oversized refrigerators you need to ensure that the storing capacity of them is adequate. You also need to consider how many shelves they contain and where you will place each other. Think of your present fridge and try to visualize the food and drink items in the new refrigerator before purchasing it.

The space in the kitchen of your restaurant where the commercial refrigeration unit will go is significant to the one you decide to buy. You need to buy one that is the right fit for the space that is allotted for it. You do not want to spend a great deal of money on a refrigerator that cannot be installed because it is too large for your kitchen.

The best type of refrigerator to purchase is one that is crafted from stainless steel. While stainless steel refrigerators do come with a costly price tag attached to them, they tend to be the most durable and also will prove to be more cost effective over a longer term.
